Sales and marketing firm Source Marketing Direct has looked into whether entrepreneurs are really easily distracted and revealed whether this is a blessing or a curse.
Source Marketing Direct are fascinated by entrepreneurial behaviour. One of the main skills that entrepreneurs need to achieve is the ability to focus on a task or project. However sometimes in business, an entrepreneur will identify a new consumer need or desire mid-project and a question is then posed; do we continue or follow a new direction?
After conducting research, Source Marketing Direct discovered that entrepreneur and Hootsuite developer Ryan Holmes was faced with this decision whilst running a small digital marketing company called Invoke. In the mist of the Invoke project, Hootsuite was born in 2008. A social media platform that allowed businesses to manage multiple social media platforms simultaneously was a hit but didn’t generate much revenue. Taking a strong seven-person team from Invoke, he laid their focus on developing Hootsuite. The business is now a large scale success used by many businesses. Source Marketing Direct evaluate both sides of the argument when assessing an entrepreneur’s level of focus;
Positives of low level focus – Entrepreneurs need to be innovative to develop ground-breaking ideas. To do this, entrepreneurs need to be able to develop new ideas on the job. An analytical mind will always look for areas to improve a system or product. Sometimes this means an entire project is scrapped and a new idea is developed.
Negatives of low level focus – There will be times when new ideas aren’t the best option for a business model. Often high levels of investment have already taken place to get an idea to a certain stage of development. To throw away an idea can decrease morale and be costly to a business revenue if a product needs to be started from scratch again.
Source Marketing Direct takes their business objectives seriously and looks to make changes that are discreet and do not disrupt current campaigns where possible. Emphasis is made on achieving the desired results for the clients.
